Art and Design
Art and Design Subject Statement of Intent
Yet, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.’
Isaiah 64:8
At Hesketh-with-Becconsall All Saints, we aim to foster an understanding and enjoyment of art, craft and design. Our excellent Cornerstones Curriculum provides children the opportunity each unit to stimulate creativity through children being exposed to a wide range of artistic methods including drawing, painting, textiles, 3D, printing and collage through exploring various artists, craft maker or designer and their techniques.
Art and Design is taught by teachers and on occasion Higher Level Teaching Assistants, following the Cornerstones Unit linking to the National Curriculum 2014, should provide visual, tactile and sensory experiences, while also building on their prior knowledge, skills and techniques. Children are encouraged to share and express their imagination through showing the development of their ideas, skills, using the language of art and working within their sketchbooks. Post learning evaluations are planned to demonstrate progress, knowledge and understanding whilst also giving children a voice.
In EYFS, Art and Design is taught as a fundamental part of topic work and is embedded throughout the Cornerstones Curriculum. The objectives taught are taken from the Expressive Arts and Design statements from ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’. In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework, Art and Design learning goal focuses on ‘Creating with Materials’ this goal focuses on safely using and exploring a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. The quality and variety of what children see, hear and participate in is crucial for developing their understanding, self-expression, vocabulary and ability to communicate through the arts.
Our Art and Design curriculum ensures that all our children can build on their knowledge each year as they progress through the school; our children are well-equipped in Art and Design for the next stage in their education. Children are proud to celebrate their work within school and the wider community. Providing opportunities to understand and respond to the world, by helping them appreciate the natural sense of wonder and curiosity; by which children can achieve their unique potential to become designers, craft makers or artists.
