Geography Subject Statement of Intent
"God said to human beings, 'Fill the earth with people and look after it. Genesis 1:27
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1
Our Geography curriculum begins with a study of the local area and progresses on to explore the wider world, its people, places and the environment. Children need to have knowledge of the world – its cities, countries, continents, seas and oceans with an understanding of human impact on eco-systems. Our Geography curriculum is designed to inspire and encourage a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with our pupils for many years to come. Our pupils learn about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, and develop their understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes and the role that they may play in the development of this. Along with factual knowledge and information, children will also develop skills in observation, investigation, problem solving and fieldwork which will be utilised in other areas of the curriculum and their lives as they grow and develop.
We use Cornerstones Maestro as a basis for our Geography curriculum. The Geography projects are well sequenced to provide a coherent subject scheme that develops children’s geographical knowledge, skills and subject disciplines. All Geography projects are taught in the autumn and spring terms, with opportunities for classes to revisit less secure concepts in the summer term.
In EYFS, Geography is taught as an integral part of topic work and is embedded throughout the Cornerstones Curriculum. The objectives taught are taken from the Understanding the World statements from ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ and the PSED Early Learning Goals. In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, Geography is integrated into the "Understanding the World" area of learning. This area focuses on children developing an understanding of their physical world and community, rather than being a separate subject as it is in the National Curriculum. EYFS emphasizes developing children's knowledge and understanding of the world through observation, discussion, stories, and non-fiction text
Geography encourages pupils to think beyond their local environment and consider the interconnectedness of the world. Geography also encourages children to explore global issues like climate change, poverty, and conflict, equipping them with knowledge and critical thinking skills.
Humans are commanded to care for God's creation.
Genesis 2:15.
